The daily lives of nurses, doctors and health care workers is increasingly being affected by discriminatory attitudes and harassment.
Court describes effects of cancer as disability for the first time
An employer should have made adaptations to enable a woman who was unable to work for a long time due to cancer to continue doing her job, according to a ruling by the Brussels Labour Court. This is the first time that a court has recognised the lasting effects of cancer as a disability. The judge ordered the employer to pay 12,500 euros in compensation to the employee for discrimination. Unia acted as intervener in the case.
‘Preferably no tenants on welfare or unemployment benefits’
In the housing market, landlords sometimes refuse to rent to people without regular employment, for example on welfare or unemployment benefits. When they do so, they are discriminating on the basis of wealth. Fortunately, anyone who experiences this form of discrimination is protected by the antidiscrimination legislation.
For the first time, the Court rules against an insurer who had turned down an HIV-infected woman
Under penalty of a fine of 2500 euro per established violation, the Commercial Court of Brussels has ordered insurance company Cardif to put an end to a discriminatory practice in which it had denied an HIV-infected person insurance.
